One of the most important things to know is that you do not need a physician’s referral to begin physical therapy in Alabama. This is called Direct Access. It puts you in control of your healthcare, allowing you to seek treatment for muscle and joint problems immediately, without having to wait for a doctor’s appointment. Our Doctors of Physical Therapy are highly trained to be your first point of contact. They can evaluate your condition, provide a diagnosis for issues within our scope of practice, and begin treatment right away.
Saves You Time: Get evaluated and start treatment faster.
Saves You Money: Avoid the cost of an unnecessary physician visit.
Leads to Better Outcomes: Research shows that starting physical therapy sooner leads to a quicker recovery.
If your therapist determines that your condition requires medical attention from a physician, we will communicate with your primary care doctor or help you find the right specialist to ensure you receive the appropriate care.
Your first appointment is the foundation for your entire recovery program. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early to complete your new patient paperwork. This visit will last approximately one hour and will be a dedicated one-on-one session with your physical therapist.
Here’s what you can expect:
To make your first visit as smooth and productive as possible, please remember to bring the following:
Your first visit will be about 60 minutes. Subsequent visits are typically 45-60 minutes, depending on your specific treatment plan.
Most patients begin with 2-3 sessions per week. As you progress, the frequency may decrease. Your therapist will recommend a schedule that is best for your recovery.
Our goal is to reduce your pain, not increase it. While some techniques, particularly those designed to restore mobility, can cause temporary soreness, your therapist will always work within your comfort level and communicate with you throughout the session.
We believe in continuity of care. While you may interact with our skilled Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs) and Rehab Techs who will guide you through your exercises under the direction of your PT, you will have a primary Physical Therapist who manages your case and performs all re-evaluations. You will always be treated by our close-knit, familiar team.
Your active participation is the most important factor in your success. The exercises and strategies you learn in the clinic are only part of the solution. Consistently performing your home exercise program as prescribed by your therapist is essential for making lasting progress.
